YOUTH SUMMIT
2012 BROWARD YOUTH SUMMIT
The 2012 Youth Summit convened at the Broward Convention Center on March 7, 2012. Service providers, advocates, youth , and Broward residents participated in fostering and coordinating many planning initiatives for Broward County. The Summit also celebrated the progress made toward meeting benchmarks set out in the Children’s Strategic Plan since it began in 1999. The event also heralded, the Plan’s backbone agency, Children Services Council of Broward County 10 years of funding, created by the voters in September 2000.

Life Maze
Over 250 middle school and high school youth participated in a life maze called “Agents of A-MAZE-ING Choices” which was organized by Region 7 Gang Reduction Task Force in collaboration with Choose Peace/Stop Violence, and sponsored by The Jim Moran Foundation, United Way of Broward County Commission on Substance Abuse, Broward County Public Schools and The Sheriff’s Foundation of Broward County. Designed to help teens better understand consequences of their life decisions, the maze is an interactive experience taking youth on a journey through possible scenarios that can occur in a teen’s life. The participants were led through a variety of rooms as they are confronted with choices or chances beyond their control in the areas of violence, substance abuse, smoking, bullying, teen pregnancy and peer pressure. An integral part of the maze is the focus on education and career choices, healthy living, substance abuse and prevention counseling. The maze rooms were staffed by more than 20 agencies and organization volunteers who simulated the realistic consequences of the teen choices
